Woman concerned about her health working out to the television.

There’s a very basic message for anybody struggling with hearing loss: Use hearing aids.

Why? A recent study revealed that individuals who got hearing aids within three years of being diagnosed with hearing loss were less likely to develop dementia, depression, anxiety, and hazardous falls than those who didn’t get hearing aids. While these health problems aren’t proven to be eliminated by hearing aids, fewer health problems have been connected to their use. Results from the study revealed that hearing aid users were 18% less likely to develop dementia, 11% less likely to develop depression or anxiety, and 13% less likely to have a dangerous fall.

Refrain From Making Excuses

It’s important to consider that when it comes to your health, these figures may appear low but they’re still considerable. Previous studies have demonstrated a connection between hearing loss and other significant health issues, but this study proved it’s an ongoing, worsening issue. It’s essential to remember that many individuals diagnosed with hearing loss don’t bother buying hearing aids. Why not? Not having the proper insurance to cover some of the costs is a common problem. Even among those who have insurance, the cost may seem too high.

Others go through the motions, getting fitted for hearing aids and taking them home only to leave them in the case because using them feels like too much of a hassle. Most people just turn up the volume to solve the dilemma and don’t think about hearing loss as much of an issue.

Louder volume on the TV won’t solve the issue, however, and while hearing loss might seem to be an inevitable part of getting older, there is far more to it.

Healthy Hearing is Important

Clearly, a major element of communication is the ability to hear. If your inability to communicate causes you to miss an essential instruction by your doctor or direction by a family member, that’s an issue. As a result, you may not be able to convey your concerns and symptoms.

There are also some less obvious issues connected with inadequate communication. If trying to have a conversation on the phone leaves you feeling frustrated and embarrassed, you might start to lose touch with people in your support system. And clearly, your chance of developing dementia is higher if your brain doesn’t get enough stimulus which happens when you are unable to hear.

Hearing Aid Benefits

Buying a hearing aid isn’t only about serious, long-term worries. Using a hearing aid will instantly enhance your quality of life, in addition to your long-term outlook. You will have a more satisfying social life and feel less isolated if you can hear and take part in conversations. When you can communicate clearly with your doctor, you can effectively share the health issues you are experiencing and comprehend your doctor’s treatment plan to decrease your anxiety further.

Do I need hearing aids? The answer is yes if you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • Being so afraid you won’t be able to follow conversations, you stay away from social situations
  • Asking people to repeat what they said frequently
  • Difficulty hearing the person you are speaking to if there is background sound
  • Watching TV at extreme volume

These and perhaps other symptoms could be a signal that it’s time to think about getting a hearing aid. Come see us to find out if a hearing aid is the best choice for you, particularly if any of these symptoms sound familiar.
